People & families
Understand how decisions and services affect daily life, caregiving, family connections, access to support, and the ability to move forward.
Criminal justice · Public safety · Security
Criminal justice decisions reach beyond a case or an agency. They affect people, children and families, staff, and whole communities. Ponte bridges research and practice to help organizations improve how systems work—and how people experience them.
Introducing Ponte
A short introduction to the people, systems, and communities at the heart of our work—and the practical decisions research can inform.
Criminal justice decisions touch lives far beyond a single case. They affect parents and children, the people harmed by crime, and the communities we all call home. At Ponte, we bring research and practical expertise together to help organizations understand these connections. We look at how systems work, how to support the people doing the work, and how safety and security planning can better protect the people they serve. The goal is thoughtful, practical change, with people at the center. If any of this sounds like a question you are facing, we would like to talk. Reach out, and let’s find out what the evidence can tell you.
About the practice
Ponte—Italian for “bridge”—connects social-science research with the practical questions facing criminal justice, public safety, and security organizations. We bring evidence and experience together to make complex issues understandable and recommendations useful.
Each engagement brings together the methods, operational knowledge, and specialist perspectives the question requires—with people, families, and communities at the center.
What we do
From pretrial decisions and community supervision to staff workload and violence prevention, useful answers begin with a clear question. We combine data, research, and practitioner insight to understand what is happening and identify practical options for change.
Studies of criminal justice systems, behavior, and public safety using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods. We connect patterns in the data with the institutional context and experiences behind them.
Evaluation that considers how a program operates, whom it reaches, and what the available evidence can establish about its effects.
Focused support for organizations developing a study, interpreting findings, or translating evidence into policy and practice.
Organizational assessment that connects staff experience, service demands, and operational evidence. The aim is to reduce avoidable burden while preserving the quality of services.
Where we work
We examine decisions, operations, and outcomes across the criminal justice system. That means understanding institutions alongside the lives of people involved in them, those harmed by crime, their families, and their communities.
Four short explainers show how we work: one public number, what it does and doesn’t tell you, and the practical questions it raises for organizations. Each ends where Ponte begins—turning evidence into better decisions.
People at the center
An efficient process matters. So does what it means for a parent trying to keep a job, a child navigating a family member’s absence, a person seeking safety after harm, or a staff member carrying an unsustainable workload. We consider these experiences together.
Understand how decisions and services affect daily life, caregiving, family connections, access to support, and the ability to move forward.
Listen to the people doing the work. Examine demands, responsibilities, and organizational conditions that affect well-being and service quality.
Connect organizational performance with public safety, trust, prevention, and the conditions that help communities thrive.
Safety & security
Protecting people requires an understanding of how they respond under pressure. Behavioral research and agent-based modeling can help organizations examine scenarios, test assumptions, and inform planning for crowded spaces and other public settings.
Security engagements bring together subject-matter expertise, human factors research, and simulation methods matched to the setting and question.
Study civilian and first responder behavior during targeted violence and emergencies, using evidence to inform model assumptions and planning questions.
Represent people as simulated agents to examine how individual actions, environments, and organizational decisions can shape collective outcomes.
Evaluate prevention programs and compare planning scenarios, with clear communication of uncertainty, assumptions, and the limits of a model.
How we work
Improvement begins with understanding how work actually happens. We connect the experience of leaders, frontline staff, and people receiving services with careful analysis and practical recommendations.
Listen to leaders, staff, and people affected by the system. Clarify the problem, the decisions ahead, and the constraints that make change difficult.
Combine interviews, observation, operational data, and research to identify causes, bottlenecks, and opportunities for change.
Develop practical recommendations, implementation steps, and measures that help organizations assess whether changes are working.
The right people for the problem
Ponte assembles expertise around the problem. Our model draws on researchers, practitioners, and subject-matter experts across the country, with the mix of skills matched to each engagement.
A clear project lead coordinates the work, while specialists bring the methods, operational knowledge, and perspectives each question requires.
Identify avoidable demands, clarify responsibilities, and develop changes aimed at easing strain and reducing the conditions that contribute to burnout.
Examine handoffs, duplication, staffing, and resource allocation to help organizations put time and effort where they are needed most.
Connect operational changes to meaningful outcomes: access to services, family stability, successful community return, and the safety and well-being of people affected by the system.
